Abstract
A contract for the world's first international optical fiber undersea cable has been signed. It is for a 122 km cable linking the UK and Belgium. The cable, capable of carrying nearly 12,000 phone calls simultaneously, will be laid by British Telecom's cableship Alert in 1985.
