Abstract

© The Author(s) 2019. In this study investigate the chemical physical properties of an electrolyte containing the salt aluminum bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [Al(TFSI)3] and the solvent acetonitrile (ACN) as well as its use in electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). We showed that the electrolyte 1M Al(TFSI)3 in ACN displays a good conductivity and viscosity, and it can be successfully used for the realization of EDLCs with operative voltage as high as 3 V. These devices display a good rate performance, and they are able to retain 80% of their initial capacitance after 50,000 cycles carried out at 2 and 5 A g−1. Taking these results into account, the use of these electrolytes appears therefore promising for the realization of high performance energy storage devices.
