Animal cell culture is widely used in the production of recombinant protein therapeutics. It also plays a key role in the fields of tissue engineering and cell-based assays. The key components in developing a successful animal cell culture process include cell source, media formulation, and bioreactor design, operation, and scale up. This entry provides an overview on the development of animal cell culture and its industrial applications.
