Abstract

Promoting the development of language, whether at home, in institutions or in speech language therapy requires the early assessment of the language competences of children within the framework of preventive care (e.g. pediatric check-up visits). This article summarizes the knowledge that pediatricians must have in order to reliably identify children at risk for language delays or with manifest language disorders in the practical routine. In addition, the most important measures for children with language difficulties are explained and early possibilities for interventions are described.
