Abstract
Background/Objective: Cardiovascular diseases in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are mostly asymptomatic due to autonomic neuropathy and many of them present left ventricular dysfunction without diagnosis or treatment until the advanced disease causes disability. Method: Hospital-based cross-sectional observational study. Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes without cardiovascular symptoms were included in the study. Their ECG and 2D Echo findings were noted and correlated with their blood glucose levels. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test. Results: Among patients with abnormal ECG, 15.6% had ST-T changes/T-inversion, 8.9% had bundle branch block, 6.4% had q waves, and 23% had sinus tachycardia at rest. Among patients with abnormal 2D Echo, 52.6% had diastolic dysfunction, 45.8% left ventricular hypertrophy, 10.9% systolic dysfunction, 16.9% valvular dysfunction, and 2.3% altered regional motility. Statistical significance was found for alterations in the ECG-2D Eco with elevated glucose and glycated hemoglobin values. Conclusions: Cardiac imaging alterations in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in this cohort were frequent, however there are no current recommenda tions that justify screening in patients without cardiovascular symptoms.
