Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the ecosystem and environment module based on the potential of the coastal mangroves at Duta Paiton Probolinggo-East Java Indonesia on improving students' cognitive learning outcomes. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a nonrandomized control-group pretest-posttest design involving 27 students of 10th grade students of natural department from class U2 as an experimental class with learning activities using the ecosystem and environment module based on the coastal mangroves of Duta Paiton and 27 students of 10th grade students of natural department from class T2 as a control class with learning activities without using modules and using problem-based learning (PBL) learning models. The technique of collecting data on students' cognitive learning outcomes is essay questions obtained based on the results of the pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA. The results of this study indicate that the ecosystem and environmental module based on the mangrove potential of the Duta Paiton beach proved to affect increasing students' cognitive learning outcomes p (0.001) < α (0.05) with the average value of cognitive learning outcomes of experimental class students being higher than the control class 12.77 > 8.85.
