Abstract
Reviews the book by Gowen and Nebrig (see record 2001-10134-000), which provides models for professionals who work with families of young children to guide parents to enhance the early emotional development of their children. The authors describe an attachment-based and supportive approach to intervention with parents, focusing particularly on mothers who are at risk for ineffective parenting. The reviewer suggests that there is a plethora of useful information and experience in this book; however, it is not easy to access all the ideas that are presented. Still, the book would be a valuable addition to the library of every home-visiting agency, community-based parent intervention program, infant-toddler child care center, and parent support center. The relationship-based intervention approach described by the authors could enhance the efforts of all those who work with young children and families.
