The evoked potential technique provides an exquisitely sensitive means of establishing the presence of subclinical optic nerve lesions, and as such is valuable in confirming the diagnosis of optic neuritis in doubtful cases. At present there is no evidence that acute unilateral optic neuritis requires treatment.
