Abstract

Describes strengthening of the Gibraltar arch dam to meet seismic safety design standards. A roller compacted concrete gravity section against the downstream face of the dam was installed by 1) excavating for the base of the RCC tapered buttress, 2) dewatering, and 3) placing RCC in 300mm lifts. Equipment included Trojan 6-wheel, all-wheel drive dump trucks and steel wheel rollers. A special TypeII cement for low alkali properties was used in the mixture. (C.J.U.)
