Abstract
The author presents commentary on his earlier work, "The Lagrangian Relaxation Method for Solving Integer Programming Problems," published in the January 1981 issue of the periodical "Management Science." He notes people who were influential in the development of the Lagrangian relaxation concept, including Michael Held and Richard Karp, who developed an algorithm for the "traveling salesman problem," and Arthur Geoffrion who coined the term Lagrangian relaxation. Also included is a table depicting the number of papers on the subject published per year from 1970 to 1999, as well as prospects of the future holds for the concept.
