Abstract
Membrane technology for gas separation has apparent advantagessuch as compactness, ease of operation, and the possibility of incorporationinto hybrid systems. This review analyzes the superstructure-basedoptimization models for membrane gas separation systems reported inthe literature. The review describes and analyzes the membrane permeationmodels embedded in the optimization models and solution approaches,the superstructures presented, the objective functions adopted, andoutcomes for different application cases. The progress is reported,and challenges and opportunities for future research are suggested.The presented review would be useful to researchers and engineersin membrane technology research and development and could lead tothe deployment and adoption of membranes in various applicable industries,such as carbon capture.
