Abstract

In summary, the shedding of PRRSV in different secretions appears to be an irregular phenomenon and probably depends on whether the monocytes that migrate to these localisations from the primary replication sites for extended periods of time in persistently infected animals, are infected or not. Finally, intermittent virus shedding, together with the low infectivity titres demonstrated in this study, could explain, in association with management factors, the low transmission rates observed in the adult pig population.
