Abstract

A review. Canna indica L. is a tropical herb belonging to family Cannaceae. It has been widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many complains. The phytochem. anal. of Canna indica showed that it contained various phytochems. including flavonoids, carbohydrates, terpenoids, alkaloids, proteins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, oils, saponins, tannins, anthocyanin pigments, phlobatinins & many other chem. compds. The pharmacol. studies showed that Canna indica plant exerted antiviral anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, molluscicidal, cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, analgesic immunmodulatory, hemostatic, anti-diarrheal and other effects. This article aims to provide information which is required to claim & explore its pharmacognostic& pharmacol. profile. Every part of Canna has beneficial properties that can serve humanity so the whole plant can be extensively studied for further research aspects. [on SciFinder(R)]
