Abstract

The issue of genetically modified fish is on the agenda in the United States, especially with the marketing application by the Company AquaBounty Technologies of a genetically modified Atlantic Salmon designed for human consumption. The situation is quite different in Europe in the sense that GM fish is currently a non-issue. Yet, in 2007, a network of researchers (called DOGMATIS) developed around this topic. Considering it as an object so far not identified, upstream of a possible crisis - as may occur in the US - and using a different approach from those used for GM plants, this network pursues two main objectives: to develop a pluralistic strategy to anticipate and inform this issue, and to contribute to the enrichment of public debate. The work presented here is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration among a dozen researchers from different institutions over more than four years. © 2011 NSS-Dialogues, EDP Sciences.
