Abstract
The bulk density of the soil is used as an indicator to evaluate compaction, soil mass, water table, porosity, air space, and infiltration. The cylinder and test tube methods are frequently used in Peruvian laboratories to characterize the soil and to evaluate its management, due to the feasibility of determination. The problem lies in the difference in the values delivered by each method, due to the use of unaltered or disturbed samples. Therefore, cylinder and test tube methodologies were compared to determine appropriate apparent density. The study was carried out at the Soil, Plant, Water and Fertilizers Laboratory (LASPAF) of the National Agrarian University La Molina and 154 soil samples from Ucayali were processed. A two-tailed paired Wilcoxon test was used with α = 0.05. Additionally, soil properties were analyzed for influence in linear and multiple regression models. Furthermore, regarding the depths it presented a significant difference, unlike the test tube. In the multiple regression models soil organic matter’s influence on the response of apparent density is observed. Neither methodology shows the same results, considering the cylinder method for structured soils. Effective assessment can monitor quality and identify problems.
