Abstract

The general method of Backus and Gilbert is applied to the inverse problem of electrical conductivity in the mantle. The data of Banks are reworked to obtain a new model and its uncertainties. It is concluded that the levelling‐off in conductivity previously obtained is only barely resolvable with current observations. A great improvement in the accuracy of the model could be expected if more precise data were available in the same frequency range. Copyright © 1971, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
