Abstract

This paper makes two claims about the grammar of social theory. The first claim is that there are three—and only three—fundamental positions in modern social theory, named here ‘enlightenment’, ‘belonging’ and ‘lower depths’. The second claim is that no position is complete, thereby allowing each position of expose the weaknesses of its rivals.
