Hand, foot, and mouth disease

Abstract

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection caused by Coxsackie virus; it is characterized by ulcers on the oral mucosa, and rash on the hands and feet. The infection occurs sporadically. HFMD predominantly occurs in pediatric population and in the form of outbreaks, during the spring and summer months. The incubation period is 4-6 days. It is generally a self-limiting condition, without sequelae. This review article presents the epidemiological, clinical, treatment and prognosis data of patients with HFMD.
