Abstract
Editor: Amrul Hasan Well-maintained basic sanitation at home and people's defecation behavior are factors in reducing disease. Coastal areas still lack toilets, which triggers people to defecate in the open. The diarrhea morbidity rate in Gisik Cemandi Village in 2020-2021 increased by 11.6%. This study aims to analyze the relationship between basic household sanitation and defecation behavior on the incidence of diarrhea. This research uses a case-control method. The case sample size was 46 houses, and the control sample was 46 houses using simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected using observation sheets and questionnaires and then analyzed using the chi-square test. The study found that most households had good basic sanitation facilities (cases=95.7%, controls=97.8%). However, there were 39.1% of case groups who had poor behavior. Households with poor defecation behavior had a 3.58 times greater risk of experiencing diarrhea (OR=3.58; 95% CI 1.32-9.73). This study had no significant relationship between basic sanitation and diarrhea (p-value=1,000). Research finds that poor toileting behavior is a risk factor for diarrhea. Improving behavior through increasing knowledge is the main priority for reducing the incidence of diarrhea.
