Abstract
Cu-doped aluminophosphate glasses, whose chemical compositions have been used as the host for Ag-doped radiophotoluminescence (RPL) glass detectors, were prepared in order to examine the relationship between the valence state of Cu and the luminescence properties. Although most of the Cu cations in these glasses were in the divalent state, which was confirmed by optical absorption and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements, emission from Cu+ was observed in addition to the emission from the host matrix. It is expected that the reason for the low conversion efficiency will be the low stability of Cu+ species compared with Ag+ in the same phosphate glasses.
