Abstract

introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine condition that impacts women’s health. In Colombia, where rigid beauty and gender standards predominate, women with PCOS face additional stigmatization, exacerbating their emotional distress. However, research on the psychology of PCOS in Colombia is scarce. objective: To determine the impact of PCOS on self-esteem and body satisfaction among Colombian women aged 18 to 40, comparing these variables between women diagnosed with PCOS and those without the diagnosis. Method: Cross-sectional comparative study with convenience sampling, divided into two groups: women diagnosed with PCOS (n = 15) and women without PCOS (n = 15). Sociodemographic and clinical identification questionnaires, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Body Shape Questionnaire were used. Data were analyzed using frequency tables and a Student t-test. results: Women with PCOS showed significantly lower levels of self-esteem (p < 0.05) and body satisfaction (p < 0.05) compared to women without PCOS. conclusions: PCOS impacts women’s psychological health. We recommend comprehensive psychological and medical support and encourage further research on PCOS from a psychological perspective.
