Qualitative industrial hygiene product life cycle analysis applied to refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) consumer product applications

Abstract

To date, the qualitative industrial hygiene product life cycle analysis process has been used to evaluate exposure potentials for 17 consumer-related applications. For the most part, these applications have included those using the largest quantities of RCF or those where the greatest level of exposure potential was anticipated. In addition, the qualitative analysis has been used to evaluate new products or applications under development to ensure that each application of RCF is well understood prior to being sold in the marketplace. By utilizing airborne monitoring, simulation testing, or other means of evaluation, the assessment team has been able to place each life cycle step into one of four categories, based on potential airborne exposure to RCF. These classifications are used as a basis to develop recommendations for engineered controls, operator training, product design changes, and personal protective equipment, as deemed necessary and appropriate. · None: No RCF detected (achieved by complete encapsulation or containment) · Low: <0.2 fiber/cc · Medium: 0.2-1.0 fiber/cc · High: >1.0 fiber/cc. In most applications, monitoring data or conclusions concerning exposure potential based on observation have demonstrated exposure levels significantly less than the RCF industry recommended guideline of 1.0 fiber/cc. The qualitative assessment process, including the recommended guideline, is subject to ongoing assessment and remains a major component of the company's comprehensive product stewardship program. The basic elements of the process described can be applied to other materials which have shown a potential for health risk.
