Abstract

This article presents an interpretation of material expression of Tawantinsuyu in the upper basin of the Aconcagua river in Central Chile. It explores the relationships between local cultures and the Inca as well as the strategies employed by the State to access this peripheral area of the " empire " . I conceptualize Tawantinsuyu as an early state (Ziólkowski 1996) to frame the hypothesis that there was a process of cultural interdigitation in this area.
