Abstract

Many of the preconditions to the present Syrian conflict can be traced back to longstanding historical tensions stemming from the last four decades of the Alawite Assad rule. Regional destabilisation, economic, political, and other natural events further contributed to Syria’s increased lack of stability and to the current civil war.
