Abstract
Wooden house of woloan in North Celebes Province has traditionally constructed using three wood species e.i. Instia bijuga, Palaquium sp. and Elmeriillia ovalis. However, supply of the three species has been markedly decreased in the last few years. There are several local wood species that can be used as substitute, e.g. Homalium foetidum (aliwowos), Koordersiodendron pinnatum (bugis), Heritiera littoralis (rorum), Octomeles sumatrana (binuang), Litsea sp. (bolangitang) and Canarium sp. (kenari). This paper presents scientific information about physical and mechanical properties of six local wood species originated from North Celebes Province. The examined properties included specific gravity, moisture content, linear shrinkage (radial and tangential), modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), compression strength, hardness, and tensile strength. Results revealed that aliwowos, bugis and rorum are the most suitable species which perform compatible characteristics to those of traditional housing timber..
