Abstract

This article aims to explore the role of gender relations in the control and use of communal and in a peasant village located in the Peruvian Andes. The context is the current process of acquiring land private deeds, which even though began several years ago, in the region, has been speeded-up by the current plans to build an international airport closed to the village. We will discuss how the emergence of a tourist attraction (El Mirador) and the consequent formation of a female handicraft association has affected the gender configurations of the village and helped to raise women’s political participation.
