Abstract

The sound energy generated in cities of all sizes produces discomfort and, in some situations, diseases to its inhabitants. Thus, it is necessary to develop appropriate tools for analysis of environmental noise that support urban planning. The acoustic maps can assist the urban planning by simulating the future soundscape of a region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of acoustic maps in urban planning in order to improve the soundscape of cities. The city of Campos do Jordao, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, which was the chosen area for the application of this study, can be considered an example of a place where there is a conurbation of activities, which generates the conflict of interests between local citizens and tourists looking for rest and those that want entertainment. The acoustic maps showed that the proximity to the entertainment areas and residences raises the environmental noise, impairing the quality of life in that region.
