Abstract

This study aims to determine the characteristics of SS316L coated with Hydroxyapatite (HA)-Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) through crystal structure test, surface morphology and adhesion. Cylindrical SS316L with a diameter of 8 mm was cut to a thickness of 5 mm. The SS316L was sterilized by immersing it in ethanol and rinsing it with distilled water. The coating material was made from a mixture of HA-PVA with composition variations of HA: PVA of 27: 3, 25: 5, 20:10 and 15:15 (wt%) dissolved in 70 wt% H2O. The metal was coated with a HA-PVA solution using the airbrush spraying method with a pressure of 3,5x105Pa, a nozzle diameter of 0.4mm and a nozzle-sample distance of 10cm. The XRD test results showed that the HA-PVA layer was formed even though SS316L was still detected which showed that the coating had not covered the entire surface of SS316L. The results of the SEM test on the cross section of the sample showed that the layers formed had thickness ranging from 97.35 to 191.37μm. The adhesion of the HA-PVA layer to the SS316L metal substrate ranged from 1.57 to 2.90MPa. The more HA composition, the greater the adhesion of the HA-PVA layer to the SS316L.
