Abstract

The simple-haired Corchorus species from Australia are revised. A generic description of Corchorus is given based on Australian material. Thirteen species are recognized, C. aestuans L., C. capsularis L., C. cunninghamii F. Muell., C. fascicularis Lam., C. hygrophilus Benth., C. macropetalus (F. Muell.) Domin, C. macropterus G.J. Leach & Cheek, C. olitorius L. (a food crop in the eastern Mediterranean region, as well as a fibre crop), C. pascuorum Domin, C. reynoldsiae Halford, C. thozetii Halford, C. tridens L. and C. trilocularis L. Distribution maps and illustrations are provided for all 13 species. Lectotypes are selected for C. cunninghamii F.Muell, C. pascuorum Domin, C. tridens L. and Triumfetta macropetalus F. Muell.
