Abstract
Spinal inflammation is one of the most important characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), since it determines spinal pain and dysfunction. Currently, spinal inflammation is primarily assessed through patient-reported outcomes and may be subject to individual factors and interferences. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has demonstrated its value in detecting bone edema and inflammation and has been included in the new International Spondyloarthritis Society (ASAS) Assessment criteria. Gradually, MRI gained popularity due to its greater sensitivity compared to X-ray, especially in early lesions and in clinical trials.
