Abstract
Obesity is associated with metabolic dysfunction, including a positive energy balance, increased insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension and inflammation. Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment of many of the metabolic defects associated with obesity. In this review, we outline the effect of bariatric surgery on energy balance, glucose homeostasis, blood pressure control and lipid metabolism. We also examine the effect of bariatric surgery on inflammation, and in particular renal inflammation, and detail the evidence for the mechanisms underlying these effects. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
