Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and identified factors: body mass index (BMI), hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia, diuretic use, anti-gout and serum uric acid associated with CKD among gout patients in Nongjik hospital, Pattani province. Medical records of the patients from October 2006 to September 2010 were reviewed. Renal function assessment with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by using the simplified Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation. Multiple logistic regressions were used to identify the association between possible determinant factors and CKD. Of the total 154 patients, 54.5% of them had CKD (based on having an eGFR less than 60 ml/min/ 1.73 m2). The patients with CKD had a greater proportion of HT (p-value = 0.004) when compared to non-CKD. Only 36.9% of patients with CKD and 57.1% without CKD achieved a serum uric acid goal of less than 8.0 mg/dl. The factors significantly associated with CKD were HT (adjusted odd ratio or aOR = 4.60, 95% CI = 1.98, 10.67), dyslipidemia (aOR = 2.17, 95% CI = 1.00, 4.70) and serum uric acid (aOR = 3.04, 95% CI = 1.44, 6.42) while BMI, DM, diuretic use and anti-gout were not found to be associated with CKD.
