Abstract

The Amsterdam, a hopper dredger built by Scheepswerf De Merwede, is described. The ship was built for the Anglo-Dutch Dredging Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Ballast Nedam Baggeren. With a cargo capacity of 18 000 m3 the Amsterdam is the largest ship built by Scheepswerf De Merwede and the largest ship in the Ballast Nedam fleet. It is classified by Bureau Veritas with the notation I 3/3 E + Hopper Dredger, Deep Sea, AUT-MS. The design, construction, dredging equipment, engines, steering and other equipment are described.
