Abstract

Advances in anaesthesia have made many advances in surgery possible and mortality directly attributable to anaesthesia is now rare. More recent developments have contributed to an improvement in the quality of perioperative management, with a decrease in anaesthetic morbidity. This review will discuss the advances in anaesthesia for surgery and obstetrics, and in acute pain management. Some of these developments have had a long history but have been introduced to clinical practice only recently.
