Abstract

Nutrition is a fundamental determinant of health and important in the prevention and treatment of many common diseases. Lifetime nutritional exposure from conception to old age acts on genetic background to determine the body's capacity to cope with biological and other stresses. Inappropriate nutrition during growth can have lasting impact on susceptibility to disease. Physicians need to include nutritional assessment and management as part of routine practice.
