Abstract
This study addresses the production of knowledge in the public health field regarding the “decision” on the route of delivery. This is an integrative literature review that discusses uses, potentials and limits of this category in analyses of the practice of cesarean sections in Brazil. We used a combination of thematic and discourse analysis techniques. The literature on cesarean sections in Brazil has advanced from the narrow focus on the individual choice to a deeper contextualization. However, literature still needs to progress, since there are few discussions on socio-cultural, political, and economic issues, and on the role of medical and non-medical technologies.
