Abstract
The Geological Survey in Penin sul ar Malaysia has been involved in groundwater investigations since it s inception in L903. ln 1953 in vesti gations under the Perl is Water Suppl y Scheme resulted i.n the exploitation of groundwater in Arau. Between 1955-1 958 th e Department , in colJ abo ration with UNT AA (United Nations Technical Aid Assistance) implemented a regional hydrogeologi cal investi gation of th e coastal areas of Peninsul ar Mala ysia whi ch resulted in th e location of several potential water b earin g zones. During the Third Malaysia Plan ( 1976-1980) th e Department togeth er with the German Hydroge ological Miss ion success full y completed a programme of in vesti gation in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pal1ang, Kedah and Perl is. Under the Fourth Malaysia Plan ( 198 1-1 985) th e Geological Survey embarked on a hydrogeologic al in vesti gation in Seri Gading, Johor and the Rembau-Tampin-Gemas area, Nege ri Sembila.n/Melaka. ln Sarawak prior to 1970 the Publi c Works Depattment undert ook hydrogeological in ves ti gati on and exploit ation in the state. However, si nce 1975 the Geological Survey has been conductin g hydro geologi cal inves ti gations along th e coastal pl ain . To-date I 5 areas have been stu died and fresh groundwater has been located in 9 of th ese areas. A hydrogeologi cal map of Peninsul ar Malays ia on a scale of I :500.000 was published in 1975. The hydrogeological map of Sarawak on th e same scale has been compil ed and will be published in 1985.
