Abstract

Shielding design of diagnostic imaging facilities has been a subject of several research works during the last years. A strong motivation of the present study is related to the fact that the most typically shielding material used in Brazil are barite concretes. The present work introduces a new technique for computer simulation of the attenuation properties of shielding materials taking into account the elemental chemical composition of the material and simulated X-ray spectra. The results of simulated attenuation properties of local barite concretes were combined to a set of workload spectra obtained in Brazilian hospitals. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
