Abstract

Site 650 lies near the western edge of the Marsili Basin. The main objectives of the site were to ascertain the nature of the acoustic basement, to date the basement and overlying sediments and compare these results with a site in the Vavilov Basin. Drilling established the presence of vesicular basalt beneath a surprisingly young sedimentary cover, divisible into two main lithological units, of late Pliocene to Pleistocene age.-A.W.Hall
