The Best Way to Predict the Future is to Create It

Abstract

The words in the title of the review belong to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The phrase aptly describes what two editors from Queen Mary, University of London (UK) and the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture (Ukraine) have created in a joint effort. We are talking about a special joint issue of the journals Culture of Ukraine and Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema. Don't let the name of the London Review of Science scare readers - it's not a lie. The publication has been published since the 1990s. It so happened that its representative, Jeremy Hicks, has been a member of the editorial board of the Ukrainian edition for the past ten years. After the full-scale invasion, many foreign figures of science and culture expressed their condolences and helped Ukrainians in every way possible. Jeremy Hicks also decided to help and not only wrote an article for the Culture of Ukraine magazine, but also offered to create a special issue on the history of Ukrainian cinema. Two years of work went into selecting authors and articles, and at the end of 2024, the special issue was published in two languages: in English in London (on the pages of the journal Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema) and in 2025 in Ukrainian in Kharkiv (Kultura Ukrayiny).
