Abstract
Material from Erich Mater's (1970) & Gustav Muthmann's (1991) reverse dictionaries is utilized in valence analysis of German adjectives in -bar. It is noted that although some may be derived from nominal or adjectival bases, most -bar adjectives are deverbal formations & their valence is closely linked to the valence of their verbal bases; the predominantly modal-passive & modal-active meanings of these adjectives are pointed out. Gerhard Helbig & Wolfgang Schenkel's (1975) tri-level model of actants (thematic roles) is used in the syntactic & semantic description of valence of German adjectives in -bar. The 532 forms selected from Muthmann's lexicon & 725 forms found in Mater's dictionary are classified according to semantic & morphosyntactic criteria. The high productivity of the suffix -bar is illustrated with examples. It is concluded that -bar adjectives can be described & classified according to the same criteria as all the other German adjectives. 18 References. Adapted from the source document
