Abstract

The purposes of this research are to study the effect of amylose and starch content on the mechanical properties of fabricated eco-friendly denture adhesive (EFDA) as well as to detect the present of agglomeration particle in EFDA samples. The investigated natural starches were corn, potato, sago, tapioca and wheat. The EFDAs were fabricated at 5, 10 and 15 weight percentage (wt. %) loading of starch filler. The characterizations such as UV-Visible spectrometry (UV-vis) for measuring amylose content, tensile bond strength (TBS), adhesiveness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. The properties of the fabricated EFDAs were investigated by comparing with a commercial denture adhesive. The results showed that the fabricated EFDAs have better TBS and adhesiveness as compared to the commercial denture adhesive. Moreover, the EFDA with high amylose content exhibited high TBS and adhesiveness. The EFDA samples with 10 and 15% starch filler loading showed the presence of agglomeration particles. Overall, the EFDA with 5 % of starch filler loading with high amylose content showed better mechanical properties. Hence, from the results obtained its shows that the fabricated EFDA have the potential to be used as an alternative for denture adhesive which commercially available in the market today.
