Les états africains contemporains dans l’épistémè africaniste française

Abstract

Dédié à la mémoire de Christian Geaffray, cet article tente de comprendre pourquoi l’africanisme français, mis à part les politologues pour qui l’objet leur était évidemment bien plus naturel, ne s’est guère intéressé aux États africains contemporains. Il en repère d’abord les premières raisons à l’époque des États coloniaux où une certaine tradition savante a privilégié l’étude de sociétés indigènes réputées être ancrées dans leurs terres et leurs visions du monde. Et il voit un coup d’envoi qui s’est perpétué paradoxalement après les indépendances africaines, malgré l’importance qu’a prise l’œuvre de G. Balandier au sein de cet africanisme et malgré le développement d’une anthropologie fortement marquée par le marxisme, comme si l’accès à l’intelligibilité de l’Afrique contemporaine devait nécessairement continuer à passer par l’étude de ses ethnies et de ses paysannats et finalement assez peu par la compréhension de ses façonnements nationaux et étatiques.Dedicated to the memory of Christian Geffray, this article attempts to understand why French African studies, apart from the work of political scientists for whom the subject was obviously a much more natural one, has shown such little interest in contemporary African states. It begins by locating the first reasons for this in the period of colonial states when a tradition of scholarship privileged the study of indigenous societies reputed to be firmly attached to their land and view of the world. This continued, paradoxically, after the independence of African states, despite the importance of Georges Balandier’s work within African studies and despite the development of an anthropology strongly influenced by Marxism, as if the way to understand contemporary Africa should necessarily remain the study of its ethnic groups and peasantries, with in the end much less importance attached to understanding the shaping of its national and state structures.
