Abstract
A geneticist's fascination with ants and other social insects yielded deep insights into the evolution of animal societies. On 12 November, Ross H. Crozier died unexpectedly from cardiac arrest while at work in his laboratory. He pioneered the use of genetic markers for the study of social insects, made crucial contributions to the theory of social evolution, and was a unique mentor for many who continued in his footsteps.
