Abstract

It is stated that, according to the literature, V segregation in steel ingots is affected by thermal state, gravitational action, and dendrite morphology. Experiments with sand cast ingots are described which were intended to show how V segregation is influenced when each factor is varied independently. The results are discussed and lead to the conclusion that they can be explained by a theory of suction by volume shrinkage of molten steel on solidification.
