Abstract
Fretting fatigue tests of 304 austenitic stainless steel and Al alloys (7076-T6, 6061-T6 and 6063-T5) have been carried out. The stress distribution at the contact interface has been evaluated using finite element analysis. A tangential stress range - compressive stress range diagram was constructed and its validity evaluated. The results showed that the fretting fatigue design curve obtained in previous studies is applicable to 304 stainless steels, but for Al alloys, the data showed that the generalized design curve obtained for steel is not applicable. A new design curve for fretting fatigue strength prediction of Al alloys has been obtained in addition to the existing design curve for fretting fatigue strength prediction of steels.
