Abstract

Bronchiectasis is defined pathologically as permanent dilatation of one or more bronchi. Although nicknamed as an "orphan" disease in the West, it is nevertheless a very common disease among the Chinese and other Orientals. The precise prevalence of bronchiectasis is not known, but it is likely to be under-diagnosed with many of the sufferers being erroneously diagnosed as suffering from COPD, particularly if they have been smokers. © 2005 Hong Kong University Press, HKU.
