Abstract

This document deals with definitions, procedures and terminology for the quantity pH which is of wide interest for chemists, biologists and engineers. It is the result of discussions since 1977 within IUPAC and related discussions in other international bodies. It constitutes in the definition of pH scales a compromise which recognises the advantages of both the previously endorsed multistandard approach and that based on the definition of a single standard with associated operational standards. © 1983, Walter de Gruyter.
