Abstract

• The health of the equine gastrointestinal microbiota is irreversibly linked to the overall health of the animal. • More work is needed to improve diagnostic and management treatment protocols for horses suffering from health issues associated with nutrition or feeding. • Current research has only begun to interpret the wealth of information contained in the equine gastrointestinal microbiota.
