Abstract

The pressure dependence of the temperature and composition of the first melting liquid in the iron-rich portion of the Fe-Ni-S system has been experimentally determined between 30 and 100 kb using a belt apparatus and a high-compression belt apparatus. The temperatures reported are not corrected for the effect of pressure on the emf of the Pt/Pt 10 Rh thermocouples. An abrupt change in slope of the eutectic temperature at about 52 kb and 996 degree C is probably due to a nonquenchable solid-solid phase transformation in FeS. Up to 6. 5 wt percent Ni has very little effect on the melting relations of the Fe-FeS system at and below 80 kb. Refs.
